SAD STORY. ISN'T IT?

The Murder of David Rizzio – 9 March 1566

Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary Queen of Scots was assassinated in front of Mary, who was heavily pregnant.
But who was David Rizzio and what led to his murder?

David Rizzio

John Guy, historian and author of “My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots”, describes David Rizzio as a “young Piedmontese valet and musician, who had arrived in the suite of the ambassador of the Duke of Savoy and stayed on as a bass in Mary’s choir”. Mary obviously took a liking to Rizzio because in late 1564 she chose him to replace her confidential secretary and decipherer, Augustine Raulet, who was a Guise retainer and the only person who Mary had trusted with a key to the box which contained her personal papers. Raulet, for some reason, had lost her trust.
Rizzio was born around 1533 near Turin, Italy, and is first recorded as David Riccio di Pancalieri in Piemonte. He is known as David Rizzio, David Riccio or David Rizzo.

A Doomed Marriage

At this time, Mary Queen of Scots was in love (or perhaps ‘in lust’) with Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, a man John Guy describes as “a narcissist and a natural conspirator”, a man who liked his drink and who was promiscuous. Mary married Darnley on Sunday 29th July 1565 at her private chapel at Holyrood. The next day, heralds proclaimed Darnley’s new title of King of Scotland.
Married bliss did not last long.

Music in Our Life

People cannot live without music. They listen to music, dance to music or learn to play musical instruments. There is music everywhere: at home, in a concert hall, in the park, at the seaside, in the forest and even in the street.
Music is not only a combination of pleasant sounds. It is an art which reflects life. Music reflects people's ideas and emotions. In this world of ours, filled with conflicts, tragedies, joys and hopes, music strives to speak to people of what is most important, urgent and poignant.

Music in the lives of different people is different: some compose music, others play music, and others only listen to it. A lot of people who cannot play any musical instrument love to listen to music either at home or at a con-cert. Different people like different kinds of music. You may prefer pop or rock music, country or folk music, classical music or jazz.
Classical
Famous composers like Mozart wrote classical music. Classical music is often performed by an orchestra (large group of musicians), a choir (a group of singers) or a soloist (just one person). People usually say a ‘piece’ of classical music rather than a ‘tune’ or ‘song’.

Jazz and blues
Jazz and blues were both originally from the USA. Jazz has a strong rhythm and notes are often syncopated (come between beats). The melody can be improvised (invented while it is played) and uses a wide range of different scales. Charlie Parker and Miles Davis are famous jazz artists. Blues is a style of music famous for being sad. The lyrics often share stories from the tough lives of the people who write blues songs.

Folk
Folk music is the traditional music of a particular group of people. In record stores, it’s common to see folk music from the UK and the USA. Country music is probably the most famous kind of folk music and is popular in many parts of the world.

Pop
Every country in the world has its own pop stars. ‘Pop’ is short for ‘popular’ music and it means just that – it is the most popular or common form of music in most countries. Wherever you go in the world, it’s easy to hear music from famous pop stars like Madonna or Lady Gaga whether you want to or not!

Rock
Rock music is famous for being loud! Rock groups use electric guitars, bass and drums to create music with a strong beat and lots of energy. There are lots of sub-genres (styles) of rock such as metal, punk and prog-rock. With so many different styles of rock to choose from, no wonder it is so popular!

Dance
Dance music is the kind of music you usually hear in clubs and bars. It has a strong beat, is often repetitive, and is perfect for dancing to. Like rock, there are many different styles of dance music. Some are slow, some are fast, but they will all get you feet moving!

Rap
Rap is different to most music genres in that it is usually spoken, not sung. The words rhyme, like a poem, and fit to the strong beat of the backing music.

Alternative
If the music you like doesn’t fit one of these categories, it is probably ‘alternative’. Music might be called ‘alternative’ because only a small group of people like it or because it doesn’t fit well into another category. The alternative section of a record store is often where you will find the most unusual, interesting music.

EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN

Education in Great Britain
Form 8

In Great Britain compulsory education begins at the age of five, but before that age children can go to a nursery school, also called play school. School is compulsory till the children are 16 years old. First they study at infant schools. In these schools they learn to draw and paint. They play much because they are very young. Later they begin to learn letters and read, write and count. At the age of seven English schoolchildren go to junior schools. They do many subjects: English, Maths, History, Music, Drawing, French and Latin. The first lesson usually starts at 9 o’clock. There are 3 lessons with short breaks of 10 minutes between them and then an hour break for lunch. After lunch they have two more lessons which are over by half past three. Junior school ends at the age of 11 when pupils take the Eleven Plus examination and then secondary school begins. When students are 16 years old they may take an exam in various subjects in order to have a qualification. These qualifications can be either G. C. S. E. (General Certificate of Secondary Education) or ‘O level’ (Ordinary level). After that students can either leave school and start working or continue their studies in the same school as before. If they continue, when they are 18, they have to take further examinations which are necessary for getting into university or college. Some parents choose private schools for their children. They are very expensive but considered to provide better education and good job opportunities. In England there are 47 universities, including the Open University which teaches via TV and radio, about 400 colleges and institutes of higher education. The oldest universities in England are Oxford and Cambridge. Generally, universities award two kinds of degrees: the Bachelor’s degree and the Master’s degree.

My dearest eight- formers! A new topic for you!

In this world of ours, filled with conflicts, tragedies, joys and hopes, music strives to speak to people of what is the  most important, urgent or beautiful.
Music in the lives of different people is different: some compose music, others play music, and others only listen to it. A lot of people who cannot play any musical instrument love to listen to music either at home or at a concert. Different people like different kinds of music. You may prefer pop or rock music, country or folk music, classical music or jazz, but you certainly cannot think of a day without music.
As for me, I prefer ... music but my parents don't always support my tastes. I have a lot of cassettes (CDs, records) but I prefer to listen to  the music online. I try to watch all the programmes dealing with it on TV and to go to the concerts as often as possible. My favourite composer (singer, musician) is... I think he (she) is very talented. I can (not) play an instrument (the piano, the guitar, the violin). It is a great pleasure to be able to play an instrument and I like it a lot.
